Hurlbert, Jacquline
About the artist
Jacquline Hurlburt grew up in the plains of Nebraska, a stark yet beautiful landscape that provided fertile ground for the artists imagination. While in college she discovered the power of clay. Soon becoming obsessed with the hypnotic spinning process of throwing clay on the kick wheel.. The figures she creates dramatize the struggle for self-acceptance through the human form. Exploring the various aspects of what we call “Personality.”
Over the years she developed a process that involved a combination of aggressive clay manipulation and methodical rendering of detail. She used the responsive nature of clay and the natural variations to add character to the figures. Her current work draws from this process to create individualistic figurative sculptures using mixed media materials.
“I use symbols to create a pictorial language that I share with my audience. Each piece is a unique expression of my response to my inner world and the world around me.”
