DeWit, Deborah
About the artist
Deborah DeWit considers the human experience and moments in time through natural and figurative subjects rendered in luminous oil paintings. Her metaphoric compositions utilize familiar subjects in unsuspecting ways with many scenes conglomerated from her home-studio-property.
DeWit is a well-known artist residing on Oregon’s North Coast. Her mature painting style has developed over the course of her lengthy career, which began as a photographer in late 1970’s. She has several books published on her work, highlighting overarching themes in photography, writing, oil painting and pastels. Deborah creates symbolic imagery through the interplay of indoor and outdoor environments, elevating her sensitive and thought-provoking compositions into a realm where real and imagined space meet.
“These paintings reflect my ideas on the subject of how our senses interact with nature to feed our imagination and our intellect, and how we cross thresholds from the real world to the meaning of things.”

“Time is naturally embedded in these paintings. Each evolved over many months and many painting sessions. They’re not a record, as much as a product of time. But just as time repeats, things reoccur in this body of work; flowers, clothing, birds, moths, hands, and figure shadows. The most recurrent theme is a reverence for everyday life — common surroundings and nature — suffused as they are with light and movement. In that way the work is a record of my own musings on life as it has unfolded over this period of time.”
