Grant, Ken

About the artist

Ken Grant has focused on themes ranging from architectural studies to quirky, surreal scenes. The quasi - fantastic worlds depicted in a Grant interior find their origins in the early 20th century craftsman bungalows that populate older suburbs and stir almost palpable nostalgia. The spartan interior scenes, featuring little more than a simple table or period chair, highlights the Architectual details to which Grant is drawn: open stairways, polished wood floors, crown molding, a view of the ocean, The artist wants “…people to feel the atmosphere in the room and the warmth of the sunlight when they look at the paintings.”

Ken Grant’s paintings capture unique moments in time whether it is the reality of changing light through a window, shadows cast from lone objects in otherwise empty rooms or surreal scenes contrived with wit and fantasy. Grant paints interiors of rooms, chairs, still life, and figurative works rendered in a highly refined style that resembles photo-realism.  His formulated scenes hint at surrealism with the use of light and shadow as essential strengthening elements in his work.

Ken Grant is an Oregon artist who has had numerous solo exhibitions during his long art career. With regular exhibitions at White Bird Gallery for over 20 years, Grant’s work has been highly collected in the region and has become nationally recognized and collected by visitors to the Pacific Northwest.
